Let punctures be a thing of the past with the Schwalbe Marathon Plus. Rugged and reliable, this tyre is perfect for touring or commuting.

Its SmartGuard layer is incredibly flexible, with a special rubber that offers a high level of resistance to shards of glass or flints. A thumbtack won't even be able to penetrate this protective layer and this rugged protection won't increase rolling resistance. - A.D.

Key Features:

  • This is a clincher tyre and will only fit on a clincher compatible rim
  • The SmartGuard layer made from a flexible, special rubber offers particular resistance punctures from typical road debris such as shards of glass and flints. Even a thumb tack can't penetrate the tyre's protective layer

Outstanding Performer

I purchased Scwalbe Marathon Plus tyres for my Specialized SportsCross bike to cycle over 3,200 miles across the US in 2013. I cycled every inch and did not have one flat tyre the whole trip. My pre- and post-training in New Zealand on these tyres have added more troublefree mileage and are still going strong. I only pumped them up on 3-4 occasions the whole trip, with little inflation required. I also survived a potential pinch flat hurtling down a bridge in Florida with an expansion gap of about 4 inches and pulled thorns and shredded tyre-wire shards from them, all without puncturing or deflating the tyres. I purchased them after reading reviews online about how strong and tough these tyres are. I can only say that I'll always ride on them, on and off road if the likelihood of a flat is miniscule.

Peace of mind

I rode 1600 miles across Spain and France on a pair of these [which had already done nearly 1000 miles] and admittedly did have one puncture, but the thorn responsible barely penetrated the tyre so the loss of air was very slow over the couple of days before I could be bothered to repair the tube. Very reassuring when the weather is as bad as it was last November. And hardly any wear visible so far.

Hard fit but decent tyre

These are one of the hardest tyres to fit known to man, I really did struggle but after placing it on the radiator over night it was a easy-ish fit.
But once on these don't need to come off, a bit heavy and slow so not ideal if you want a quick commute but one of the best touring tyres you can buy. Never ever had any problems with them (bar the fitting)

Best commuter tires I have found

I put on about 5k miles/year commuting. I was happy with the stock Kendas that came with my bike. But, when they started to wear down, they became increasingly susceptible to glass cuts.

I did my research and many people were recommending Continental Ultra Gatorskins. I put them on with tire liners for extra protection. Worse than useless. I had at least two flats per week. I didn't get any glass cuts, but the tires and liners wouldn't stop half the thorns. I tossed them out after a couple of months.

Then I picked the Marathon Plus. Total dream. They are heavy and a bit expensive, but well worth those drawbacks. Because of the foam layer, I decided to forgo the tire liners. Five months and 2,000 miles with no sign of wear on the tread and not a single flat. I might as well leave my pump and spare tube at home (but not going to tempt fate). Also the Marathons have a decent tread pattern where the Gatorskins are pretty much slicks - making for treacherous riding in wet or frosty conditions.

They have a decent rolling resistance. I operate at the high end of the pressure rating. My commute times have increased by about 30 seconds to 1 minute over a 19-mile, 1 hour commute. Completely acceptable considering the hours saved by avoiding flats.

Bonus: there is a reflective ring around the sidewall of the tire. They really pop when lit up by headlights from the side.

STRESS FREE!! Excellent choice for commuting/touring

Put 2500km on these tires since February and am still using the same tubes! Never had a flat once!!! Even though they are a little bit heavier, I still find I can cruise quite well! I commute everywhere and know that I can trust these tires. That makes for a very stress free day. I am definitely content with these and would recommend them to anyone!!

Offers piece of mind

I have done 1500 kms & find them really good. There harder on the road but that's due to there puncture resistance construction. I have run over all sorts of things that would have given me flats in the past but I haven't had one yet. I didn't have much bother fitting them but I have fitted a lot of tyres. I would recommend them to any tourer or commuter.
