The Evolution of the bicycle saddle is here.

The biomechanical saddle is designed to help cyclists sit correctly and maximise the force of the pedalling.
This way we can avoid or eliminate hip rotations, also know as perineal pressure inconvenience, groin discomfort and other inguinal discomfort known as cycling discomforts.

The Shark also provides much stronger pelvic stability and it equals lateral pressures of the ischia (sitbones) which translates to a more efficient pedalling efficiency and improved performance (+/- 10%)

The key feature is its saddle fin which stops the rider from varying his/her position to incorrect positions like on other saddles.

AF-NET
AF-Net is a revolutionary move forward in saddle technology. The AF-Net matrix that is built into every Essax Saddle has been proven through totally independent testing to improve performance by an average of 4%.

In the independent test Caja Rural rider Garcia Raul Alarcon was asked to hold  200,300 & 400W for 15 minute periods with a 10minute est period between each set at 150W.

The test was held over 3 days, testing saddles in different orders and every time the riders heart rate was lower using the Essax saddle to maintain the wattage output. So in short the rider was having to work less to output the same power and when he worked at the same heart rate his power output was greater hence providing a performance gain through Af-Net technology.
The test showed a 2.5% performance gain with an Essax saddle against a Fizik Arione saddle and in all tests an average of +4% has been found.

New technology AF-NET.
Tested by the professional team of Caja Rural:

ANTI FATIGUE NET:
+38%  more rigid
+63%  more rigid to the sitting impact
+70%  more resistance to dynamic fatigue
+4,7% more efficiency & improved performance

Good concept, poor materials

My first review was very positive and related to comfort and effectiveness. Unfortunately, after only 800 miles the fabric is worn through near the saddle nose due to contact with my shorts. This has exposed the very thin nature of the cover fabric and its inability to withstand perfectly normal wear. I've returned mine for a refund.

Just the job

I was interested when I first saw this product in Cycling Weekly as I have a rotated pelvis resulting from a hip replacement and find it impossible to achieve a comfortable and efficient feet/pedals interface. Their initial reaction was clearly that they didn't fully understand the concept. I didn't follow it up at that time. Later in the year CW rated the Shark as one of the best innovations of 2015 so I investigated further and read all the on-line reviews, which were generally positive, so I decided to give it a go. My first impression was that the saddle was much firmer than the Fizik and Bontrager saddles I was used to and was sure to cause pressure sores after a time. Not so! As soon as I set off on my first [short] ride I felt comfortable, although I'd been sure to wear my best Assos Mille shorts. I arrived home a couple of hours later still feeling confortable. My next ride was with a very fast group over a long hard and lumpy route which had me working at high intensity for long periods; a much tougher test for this remarkable saddle. Although there was slight discomfort at the end of the ride, this was due mainly to my physical asymmetry and would have been much worse with my previous saddles. There's absolutely no doubt that this saddle helps to stop my backside sliding laterally so it does what it claims to do in that respect. What it can't do is to stop my pelvis rotating so that one hip is further forward than the other, but I'm working on that now by adjusting my posture and position, which is so much easier now that the lateral alignment is assured. If you're considering a new saddle, even if you aren't aware of any existing position issues, this might very well be the one for you. I chose the version with Ti rails for better give over the bumpy Northumberland roads.
